Range 10: 5 to SW (63%)

With my first round in two weeks scheduled for the long weekend, I decided to use all my clubs at the range in my last practice session prior, hitting 5 shots with each club and tracking the results. I was encouraged by my 63% on-target rate, hitting 5 of 8 clubs on target over half the time.

SW (+3): I hit 3 of 5 SW shots on target, pushing one right (+1), and blading one (+2) for an overall score of +3. I’ve been accurate with my SW on the course in recent rounds, a trend I’ll look to continue.

GW (+2): I also hit 3 of 5 GW shots on target, pushing one right (+1) and one left (+1) for an overall score of +2. I was happy with the consistency in both the trajectory and distance on my shots.

PW (+1): my best club on the day, I hit 4 of 5 PW shots on target, with my only miss being a ball pulled left (+1). With a distance between 120 and 130 yards, I find my PW being the most common club that I hit approach shots with, so it’s important that I continue to improve my consistency with the club.

9-iron (+2): I hit 3 of 5 shots on target with my 9-iron, pulling one left (+1) and pushing one to the right (+1) for an overall score of +2. I’ve seen consistent progress with my 9 iron, vastly reducing the number of mishit balls with my most common misses being due to alignment.

8-iron (+4): I struggled with my 8-iron, hitting only 2 of 5 on target, pulling one to the left (+1), pushing one to the right (+1), and shanking one (+2) for an overall score of +4. I have been fairly consistent with my 8 iron in previous practice rounds, so I will attribute my inconsistency as an anomaly.

7-iron (+2): I was happy with the way I hit my 7-iron, hitting 3 of 5 on target, and pushing two right (+2). One trend to keep an eye on is that I had more left-to-right ball movement than my usual fade. While I was able to adjust my line and still hit the ball on target, it is a trend that I will monitor.

6-iron (+5): my 6-iron was my worst club on the day, hitting just 2 of 5 on target, pulling one to the left (+1), and shanking two shots (+4). My 6-iron was the only club I shanked twice, both a result of not getting under the ball. This has plagued me at times on the course, so I will monitor in future range sessions to ensure I am getting under the ball with my long irons.

5-iron (+6): given my recent challenges off the tee, I hit ten 5-iron shots on the day, five off the deck, and five off the tee. Overall, I hit 5 of 10 shots on target, pushed 4 right, and shanked one. Similar to my 7-iron, I had a major left-to-right movement on my ball which was largely the reason that four of my ten shots missed to the right. This is an area that I’ll work on, as inconsistency with my 5-iron has had a negative impact on recent rounds.

Overall, I was happy with the way I hit the ball, only mishitting 5 of 45 shots (11%), hitting nearly 90% of my shots well, missing left or right on 15 of 45 or 33%. If I can continue to improve my misses so they are primarily left or right of the target as opposed to shanked, chunked, or bladed, I can continue to reduce easy strokes off my scores on the course.
