Range 13: 5, 6, 7, PW (67%)

After three rounds over the weekend, I took Monday off, then was back at it on Tuesday afternoon and was very happy with the way I hit the ball, particularly with my 6-iron and 7-iron, two clubs I had struggled with at the range heading into the weekend.

PW (+5): I hit 6 of 10 shots on target with my PW, pulling one to the left (+1), pushing two to the right (+2), and blading one (+2). I was happy with the distance and trajectory of the ball, and aside from the bladed shot, my misses were just barely offline. Continuing to hit my wedges well will allow me to drastically reduce my scoring in future rounds.

7-iron (+9): I was happy to hit 15 of 20, or 75% of my 7-iron shots on target, however when I missed, I missed badly, hitting three right (+3), blading one (+2), and chunking two (+4). Apart from the bad misses, I was also hitting my 7-iron lower than usual, though fortunately the flight was much straighter than in previous range sessions.

6-iron (+5): my 6-iron was my best club on the day, hitting 16 of 20 on target, pushing three to the right (+3), and chunking one (+2). As above, I was hitting the ball lower than usual, but was encouraged that my left-to-right ball movement was far less pronounced, returning to a fade as opposed to the slice that I was battling in my previous range sessions.

5-iron (+10): I hit 11 of 20 shots on target with my 5-iron, pushing 8 to the right (+8), and chunking one (+2). Unlike with my 6-iron and 7-iron, my left to right ball path recurred with my 5-iron, often looking more like a slice than a fade off the club. With my primarily hitting 5-iron off the tee, I will continue to place a major emphasis on mastering the club in future range sessions, paying special attention to bringing my backswing straight back, and my follow through straight through to avoid the slicing motion I’ve recently had on the ball.

Overall I was very encouraged with how I hit my PW and 6-iron, though admittedly have some work to do with my 7-iron and 5-irons. After three rounds this weekend, I know long irons remain a major opportunity for me, in addition to continue to improve my putting and chipping to reduce my scores.
